Home > What Is the Skin Barrier? Signs, Causes & How to Support It
Tightness after cleansing, flaking, redness or products suddenly stinging can be signs that your skin barrier is under stress. The barrier is an important foundation of skin health – but healthy skin depends on more than the barrier alone.
At SENZE, we look at the bigger picture: how your skin is functioning, what may be affecting it, and what it needs to become stronger, more balanced and more resilient over time.
The skin barrier is mainly the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin. Think of it as a brick wall: skin cells are the bricks, while lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids form the mortar between them.
Its job is simple but important: help keep water in and help protect the skin from the outside environment. When the barrier is disrupted, skin can lose water more easily and may feel dry, dehydrated, rough, flaky, tight or sensitive.
TEWL, or transepidermal water loss, measures the rate at which water is lost through the skin. It is widely used as an objective indicator of skin barrier function. Higher TEWL can suggest that water is escaping more readily.
But TEWL is only one piece of the picture. Hydration, sebum balance, skin type, sensitivity, skincare habits, environment and treatments also matter. No single reading tells us everything about your skin.
A weakened skin barrier is only part of the story. Better skin health starts with understanding what is affecting your skin and why.
If we only support the barrier without addressing what keeps stressing it, the problem may keep returning.
Recognising the signs of a damaged skin barrier early makes it easier to adjust your routine before things get worse.
These signs can have other causes too. Persistent, severe or unexplained symptoms should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
Dry skin usually refers to skin types that produce less sebum. Dehydrated skin lacks water in the outer skin layers – and even oily skin can be dehydrated.
That is why shine does not automatically mean your skin needs stronger cleansing or more exfoliation. The question is: is your skin holding water, staying balanced and tolerating your current routine well?
Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids are natural parts of the skin barrier. Other ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, panthenol and squalane may support hydration, comfort or barrier care in different ways.
Good skincare isn’t about having more ingredients. It’s about giving your skin what it needs, in a formula it responds well to.
More isn’t always better. Skin barrier repair often just needs time and consistency, giving your skin the chance to recover and get stronger before moving on to other concerns or more advanced treatments.
Singapore’s hot, humid climate can leave skin feeling oily, but oily skin can still lack water. Air-conditioning, sun exposure, cleansing, makeup and active skincare can also affect how skin feels and behaves.
That is why we look beyond whether skin is simply dry, oily or sensitive.
Our approach goes further than measuring the skin barrier and recommending a gentle facial. We want to understand how your skin is functioning, what may be holding it back, and what it needs to perform better over time.
We put these pieces together to understand your skin in context – not just what we can see on the surface.
Skin Capacity is SENZE’s way of looking at the bigger picture – how well your skin appears to function, stay balanced, tolerate appropriate skincare and recover from everyday stresses.
Instead of chasing every visible concern straight away, we first ask whether your skin has the right foundation for what you want it to achieve.
For one person, that may mean supporting hydration and the skin barrier. For another, it may mean reducing over-exfoliation or simplifying an overloaded routine. If the skin is already stable, we can move towards concerns and goals such as dullness, texture, congestion, pores, pigmentation or signs of ageing. Before asking, “What should I do next?”, ask: “What does my skin actually need next?”
Skin health is not just about fixing what you see today. It is about understanding the skin underneath and building a stronger foundation for your longer-term goals.
At SENZE, we call this better skin performance: supporting skin to function well, maintain hydration and balance, and stay resilient as its needs change.
For us, skin longevity means supporting skin function, resilience and condition over time – not simply chasing short-term cosmetic improvements.
Advanced treatments have their place, but they do not always need to come first. If skin is irritated, dehydrated or showing signs of barrier disruption, the priority may be to first help it recover and become more stable.
More targeted or advanced treatments can then be considered when appropriate for your skin, tolerance and goals.
If you are dealing with dryness, dehydration, oiliness, redness, sensitivity, flaking, dullness, texture, congestion, clogged pores – or your current skincare no longer seems to work as expected – the first step may not be another product or treatment. It may be to understand your skin better.
